Default Rating Scale Question

I am working on a survey that will ask people to rate 20 different items on a scale from 1 - 20 (with 1 being the most important) and one of these 20 items will be an "Other" option that will allow people to add and rate an item. Since we are asking people to rank 20 items, it requires scrolling and some of our testers have been having a difficult time keeping track of the rating scale.

While working with a colleague over the phone, we were able to get the question to look like the attached picture, which we like, but for some reason, we can't replicate what we did. I was able to capture it via a screen shot, but my colleague never was able to actually see the same thing on her browser (we were both using Firefox). I would like to include the rating scale on each row (as pictured), so that users can keep track of the numbers more easily.

During the brief time I was testing the functionality of the pictured survey, the question only permitted the selection of one item in each column. If a rating was selected twice, it would accept the second selection and remove the first. This functionality has also been lost. Now, users have to wait until they submit the survey before an error message is received. Before, it wouldn’t even allow users to select an item twice.

I am currently using Checkbox 4.4. Due to some recent staffing issues, we have yet to upgrade to v. 4.5. I hope this is not a problem. Any help that could be provided would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! - Sean

Thank you for your post. The intended functionality is that the respondent must submit the page of responses before he or she is told whether the responses are valid or not.

To replicate this type of question:

1. When editing your survey click Add Item
2. Click Matrix
3. Click Add/Edit Rows and add your 20 rows
4. Choose Rating Scale from the dropdown of column types and click Plus
5. Configure the scale to start at 1 and and at 20
6. Choose the option "Each answer in this column must be unique"
7. Submit the column settings then submit the matrix settings

This should accomplish what you were looking for

Thanks for the reply. I have 2 follow-up questions:

1) What about the numbering across each row (as seen in the screenshot)? Can this be replicated? If not, how come it worked once?

2) Is there a reason why when I tested the survey that produced the screenshot, I was unable to select a number more than once? This was before I submitted the responses. I know from past surveys that I created that one has to normally submit the survey, but this was not the case this one time.

Thanks again for your help!

1) It looks like the numbers appearing in each row happened as a fluke, since the product is not supposed to show the options in each row, so it's not likely that you'd be able to replicate that.

2) This may be related to the same fluke that caused the display of item option labels in the matrix.
