Matrix with Open Ended Single Line Text

I have created a matrix item with a column for open ended single line text. The matrix is formatted correctly, but I cannot control the column widths of the matrix. The variable titles (example: Male, Female) barely fit in the left-hand column, while the right-hand column contains the input field and then extends across the width of the page.
I can stop the matrix from extending the width of the page by placing a value (example: 500px) in the WIDTH field under the APPEARANCE heading, but no combination of numbers that I place into the two WIDTH fields yeilds a nice, tight matrix.

What am I doing wrong?

Never mind - our IT department updated us to version 4.5, so I can now manage the size of matrix grids with open text questions.
