It is possible to authenticate against Active Directory in both Ultimate Survey and Checkbox. In Ultimate Survey you will need to disable the Anonymous Access setting; this settign is located on the Directory Security tab in IIS. In this scenario IIS is responsible for the authentication.

Domain users who do not have network user accounts in Ultimate Survey will be assigned a set of default roles. You can configure these roles on the network user settings page which is located at Settings -> Network Users. If you would like to elevate the permissions of any particular domain user you will need to create a network user account for them in Ultimate Survey. Please note that these users still authenticate against active directory.

In Checkbox a new feature was added which allows domain users to enter their credentials at the login.aspx page and authenticate against Active Directory. This new feature does not rely on IIS to authenticate.
